What is Folding@Home?

Taken from http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ :

Folding@home is a distributed computing project, that very simply stated, studies protein folding and misfolding.
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

tastyfish is catching up to me. I am mostly running folding on a couple of computers at work. For me to run folding on my PS3, I would have to keep the cabinets open, defeating the purpose of putting it there. I may need to stop running it from time to time, so I expect you asshats to dethrone me soon.

I doubt I'd win, since I only run it on my PS3 and I need that to game on.
You're not paranoid if they really are out to get you!!!!

Now that it is starting to warm up outside down here, the room where my PS3 resides is going to be too warm to keep it on all the time. The fans would run full speed constantly if I did that... Of course, maybe I should do it so my PS3 fails under warranty and I can get a new one... hmmm... ;)

But the PS3 accumulates points faster than the computer generally, and this competition is focused on weekly points production.

This will be an ongoing competition..........and, there might be other prizes or rewards for those that are not necessarily the winner. 8-)

I don't get the stats part. I had mine Folding last night for about 1 1/2 hrs. I didn't even complete one work unit. So I don't get a score at all? WTF am I doing wrong? Apparently it takes 5 hrs for one work unit to be completed. There's no way I'll have the PS3 on that long without playing on it.

It takes on average 9 hours on the PS3 to complete a WU. A lot of guys leave them on overnight after they finish playing. You can set it up so it automatically shuts down after a period of time or after a WU is completed. When you restart next time, it'll continue where it left off.

That's a personal decision since running the PS3 on a compute intensive task like folding does two things: run up your electricity bill and your cooling bill. People don't realize how much of your personal money goes to this international project. Hopefully it's for a good and righteous cause.

The last three work units that have been given to me are only a little over 3 hours each to complete.

I was getting 6 - 8 hour work units prior to this past weekend.
Nothing to see here, move along.

If you take too long to complete a unit, usually longer that about a week, it won't count against your total. If you start one, you should try and finish it within 3 or 4 days to be safe. I can't even count the number of times I took too long, only to complete something and not have it count.

This is from the PS3 FAQ on the Folding@Home Website:

How long do I have to complete it?
Note that Work Units "expire" after a certain amount of time. This means that after a certain amount of time, if the WU has not been returned, we assume it's not coming back and our server moves on from there. This is necessary due to the fact that future work units depend on old ones and so we need to eventually give the work to someone else to get it completed. The times to complete a WU for the PS3 is short (8 hours), so the deadline time is also correspondingly short (2 days).
Nothing to see here, move along.
